Abstract

The aims of this study are (1) to evaluate the portfolio business strategy for telecommunication products implemented by PT XYZ Indonesia, (2) to find out the position and map of telecommunication products as the reference for improving the business competitiveness of the telecommunication products at PT XYZ Indonesia, and (3) to provide alternative strategies based on business strength and industrial attractiveness. The method used in this study was survey through interviews and questionnaires. The analytical tool used was GE Matrix, which was based on the business strength indicator as the internal factor and the industrial attractiveness indicator as the external factor. The internal factors consisted of the relative market share, the marketing, the research and development, the distribution, the breadth of product, the managerial competence, the reliabilities, the coverage area and the price. The external factors were the market size, the market growth rate, the structure of competition, the industrial profit, the technology trend and the regulation. The analysis was also based on the current and future conditions of the products. The results of study showed that on the current ISP and VSAT had medium business strength and industrial attractiveness. Satellite phone had medium industrial attractiveness and low business strength. Position in GE Matrix is selective and the alternative strategies suggested were to develop the segment, the specialization, and the investment selectively for ISP and VSAT, while for Satellite phone is divestment and the alternative strategies suggested were prune lines, minimize investment and position to divest. On the future VSAT had high business strength and industrial attractiveness, position on GE Matrix growth and domination, the alternative strategies suggested were to get maximum growth, domination, and investment.
