Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the feasibility of establishing a beef cattle fattening in North Sumatra. This study thoroughly identifies the inquiring of five different aspects in starting a business. These aspects are (1) market aspect, (2) technical aspect, (3) human resources and organizational aspect, (4) enviroment aspect, (5) financial aspect and sensitivity analysis. The type of data that are used in this study are primary and secondary data. Primary data also include direct interviews with small, middle and large scaled beef cattle farmers in north Sumatra while secondary data refers to the related information collected from different institutions. The result of this study shows that the demand of beef for consumption in north Sumatra is estimated to increase every year. Unfortunately, the production of beef cattle by local farmers in this province does not compensate the increasing demand of beef. For instance, in 2004, an approximately 60 % of the demand of beef in north Sumatra is fulfilled by other province outside of north Sumatra and even foreign countries. If significant changes are not made, then it is estimated that each year this condition will still go on. After inquiring the market, technical, human resources and organizational, environment aspects, shows that the province of north Sumatra has a sufficiently high potential in establishing a business in beef cattle fattening especially in the region of Deli Serdang. The study also shows that the critical factors in beef cattle fattening are feed supply, environment (climate), and land which can be considered as an advantage from the province of north Sumatra in general, and particularly the region of Deli Serdang. The calculation conducted in financial aspects concludes that starting business in beef cattle fattening is suitable in Dali Serdang. The sensitivity analysis also conclude that the average daily gain for 0,65 kilogram, the increase of feed supply until 2.8 times, the selling of cattle waste until 0%, the increase of operational cost until 2.55 times, and the increase of salary until 2.65 times can still be considered feasible.
