Abstract

The trend of spare part production and sale growth will keep increasing along with increased motor vehicle production in Indonesia, including rubber-based spare part production industry. Due to its large production scale, automotive industry uses manufacturing system in the production. Two of the companies in rubber-based manufacturing industry are CV XYZ and PT HIJ. Increased production growth doesn’t determine sale growth of motorcycle spare parts. In the past years, the market share of motorcycle spare part production business declined due to lowered motorcycle sales growth. The reduced market share of spare part production business lowered the financial performance of CV XYZ. This was very undesirable by the heads of CV XYZ. Therefore, the head of the companies made a temporary strategy to improve the market competitiveness of motor vehicle spare part production business by improving total quality management. Therefore, this study was performed so that the temporary strategy is consistent with the purpose of improving the financial performance of the companies. This study aimed to study the implementation level of TQM (Total Quality Management) factors in the companies, to study the importance of obtaining ISO 9001:2008 quality certification in performing TQM, to study TQM performance in the companies, to analyze any problem and determination of critical factors of TQM implementation, and formulate TQM improvement strategy. This study was performed on September to November 2015 in CV XYZ. While in PT HIJ, it was performed on December to February 2016. The research locations were CV XYZ and PT HIJ in Sukabumi, West Java. The location was selected by purposive sampling. The research respondents were determined by purposive approach method by dividing them into two parts to answer the provided questionnaire. Moreover, this study used descriptive approach and quantitative analysis by distributing questionnaire purposefully (purposive sampling), with data processing stage by testing questionnaire quality by validity and reliability tests, evaluating TQM implementation level in each company by calculating the average value of each TQM attribute, making causative diagram, assessing the implementation level of each company by providing an assessment scale based on existing condition, making House of Quality (HOQ) using QFD method, analyzing the solution resulted from QFD using 5W + 1H analysis and determining improvement priority using Fuzzy AHP method. The results of this study were, firstly, the TQM implementation level in CV XYZ was similar between attributes with medium scores and good scores, while in PT HIJ there were more medium scores than good scores. It meant that PT HIJ should improvement the TQM implementation in both companies. The result of the second purpose was that the importance of ISO 9001 quality standard certification didn’t have large influence on total quality management in rubber-based manufacturing business such as CV XYZ which provides services. It was revealed in the analysis by fuzzy AHP method that improvement of quality management performance should be prioritized, so in designing the improvement strategy of total quality management in rubber-based manufacturing company based on service didn’t require ISO 9001 certification. However, it should be considered if a the companies wanted to increase the market share which shifted to stand-alone companies. The result of the third purpose was quality management performance should be improved in four of its attributes, i.e. product quality performance, manufacturing process quality performance, customer service quality performance and cost control performance. Their qualities were “medium” so they should be improved in the assessment and control of quality management performance in each company. The fourth research result was the problem analysis on total quality management found main causes of the problems in improving total quality management in each company, i.e.: process management, sustainable improvement, focus on customer, top management leadership and commitment on product quality. Three top priorities expected by consumers in quality attribute which influenced the consumers were labor cost efficiency, work time efficiency, and system/procedure standardization. Therefore, the focus on the five main problems should be improved to fulfill consumers’ expectation.. The last research result was the improvement strategy of TQM/total quality management in CV XYZ is: the most important factor is quality management performance, the most competent actor in improving TQM is the director and the prioritized purpose is commitment to improve goods and service quality. The priority strategy used in improving TQM is using SOP consistently.
