Abstract

A capital market could provide a better financing for companies and offer a prospective investment for public. However, capital market hasn't been developed as well as the banking sector in Indonesia. The efficiency of Exchange Members (broker) in Indonesia should be optimized by the regulator to be able to compete with other countries. This paper measured the efficiency level of broker and its effect on business competitiveness using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach and a regression model. Fixed assets, employee expenses, brokerage commissions, and income from underwriting and investment manager activity is used to assess the efficiency and its influence to competitiveness with some variables, such as the Operational Efficiency Ratio (OER), Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR), and dummy variables for the ownership, the transaction facility, and the company's scale. The results found that the efficiency of broker about 0.22. The number of brokers with limited capital caused this low efficiency. The broker with a larger-scale has a higher efficiency than a small one. The joint venture broker is relatively efficient because it usually has a large capital. The minimum requirement of Net Adjusted Working Capital (NAWC) is insufficient to strengthen the broker and should be increased from Rp25 billion to Rp100 billion. This initiative is expected to encourage the broker to become more competitive in the ASEAN.
