Abstract

Since the financial crisis in the United States caused by the subprime mortgage crisis, investors began to pay attention to global economic conditions in making decisions in investing. The subprime mortgage that occurred in 2007 and peaked in September 2008 with the collapse Lehman Brothers the 4th largest investment bank in the United States that has stood since 158 years. The crisis caused considerable concerns in global financial markets, international stock markets and overseas markets. In early 2010, the Eurozone faced a serious debt crisis that has put Greece on a very strong economic crisis. Economic growth of China also shows a slowdown starting in 2010. This worsens the condition of the global economy. Global GDP growth shows a downward trend since 2010. Data from the World Bank in 2015 showed the United States ranked first in the world economy, followed by China as the second rank. The contribution of these two countries is almost 40% of the world economy, which means the economic conditions of these two countries greatly affect the global economy. Economic conditions will affect the banking sector and capital markets. The results of this study indicate the performance of Bank BCA, BRI and Mandiri ie NIM, NPL, LDR and CAR ratios are not performed by the global economic slowdown. All financial ratios are in three banks including healthy category, only Bank Mandiri has a high NPL at the beginning of the study period. The return of banking stocks during the study period was fluctuating with the uncertain global economic conditions. Moreover, the United States also faced presidential elections in the research period, with the elected President coming from a different party with the previous President thereby adding to the uncertainty of the global economy. Impact of global economic slowdown particularly China GDP growth has positive and significant impact to banking stock return. Indonesia GDP growth and CAR have a significant and negative impact on stock return. United States GDP growth, NIM, NPL and LDR have no significant impact to stock returns.
