Abstract

Research Institute for Tea and Cinchona (RITC), after going through several changes on Legal Entity status, eventually became corporate in 2009. However RITC still find obstacles in achieving financial independency indicated by the negative equity from year to year. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a study in order to analyze the SWOT position of RITC organization; map the Strategic Business Unit (SBU) of RITC; determine the cost and income structure of each SBU; analyze business portfolio based on BCG matrix; and managerial implication for self-financing of RITC. The data collected consisted of primary and secondary data. Primary data was collected from questionnaires filled by the respondents from management and stakeholders of RITC. The data analysis method used was S-W-O-T analysis in which the weighting on each criteria of S-W-O-T factors using the weighting method of Eckenrode. The cost was classified in variable cost and fixed cost. Business portfolio analysis and position of each SBU of RITC used Boston Consulting Group (BCG) matrix. Furthermore, the combination of the analysis result of cost structure and SBU performance were used to sharpen the result of BCG matrix. Internal Factor Evaluation (IFE) result indicated negative score of 0.14 which showed the internal position that was weak. The main weakness was on the marketing performance of products and services of RITC. EFE indicated positive score of 0.11 which showed the external position of RITC that was strong. The weakness of RITC was more dominant than the strength, and the opportunity of RITC was more dominant than the threat, in other words the position of RITC was the meeting point of internal factor of Weakness and external factor of Opportunity. Therefore the strategy suggested was Divestment/Investment. The analysis result of BCG matrix reported that most of SBUs of RITC or 73 percent were in Question Mark (8 SBU) category; 18 percent were included into Cash Cow (2 SBU) category; and 9 percent was included into Dog (1 SBU) category. None of the SBUs were included into Star category. The composition of fixed cost in 11 SBUs of RITC was high about 28.7 - 75.5 percent. Among eight SBUs included into Question Mark category, when they were linked to the cost structure and the business performance, there are only 3 SBUs which are very potential to be pushed into the Star category i.e. SBU6 of White Tea and Package Tea Unit; SBU7 of Superior Clones of Tea and Cinchona Production; and SBU10 of Arabica Coffee Garden Unit. SBUs that gave contribution of profits were the SBU with business development more than 10% and the income was relative much more than the variable cost. The three SBUs could be driven from Question Mark category into the Star category using Build strategy, which a strategy to increase the investment on product or business unit in order to increase the market share.
