Abstract

The choosing of the topic, " Technology and Business Strategy to increase the competitiveness of PT.Tunas Prospecta Agritama Agroindustry Products" is based on the business prospect that could be developed in Indonesia. Vegetable products and fruits have been known to the Indonesian farmers , such as , white melon, sweet potatoes, eggplant , ginger, mini water melon etc. Some of them could be grown in Indonesia and exported to Japan. The need of frozen vegetables in Japan trends to raise from 430.000 ton in 1993 up to 700.000 ton in 1998. In 1995, lndonesia experienced deficit of USD 1.88 bio for agricultural commodity. Out of eight commodities exported, only flowers, processed vegetable and fruits showed a surplus of USD 32,30 mio and USD 36,14 mio subsequently. PT. Tunas Prospecta Agritama is a middle scale private owned company established in 1987 concentrating in export oriented agricultural products. Besides a producer of agricultural products, PT. Tunas Prospecta Agritama also exported vegetables and fruits with Japanese spesification. In 1999 , Japan has imported more than 203.000 ton of vegetables in order meet its need. Commodities such as vegetables and fruits have great opportunity to be developed in lndonesia with professional management on farm and off farm. Indonesian market share in Japanese market currently is only 4 %and China's export to Japan has reached more than 90 %. The above mentioned conditions shows 5 (fives) problems that has to face by PT. Tunas Prospecta Agritama. The problems are : (1) The high lwd of competition which comes from China . Taiwan, Thailand, the Phillipinnes and Vietnam. (2) The need to developed high technology products which is well off than its competitors. (3) PT. Tunas Prospecta Agritama has a limited capability to raise the production of Japanese Cucumber and Sweet Potatoes. (4) To formulate company's competitive advantage in the international market (5) The uncertainty of extemal business condition. The research aims are to (1) Analyze the implementation of technology management in processing Japanese Sweet Potatoes and Japanese Cucumber. (2) Identity SWOT factors, which would bring a positiein fluence on the success of technology management process in processing Japanese Sweet Potatoes and Cucumber. (3) To formulate alternatives in developing the technology strategy and business srategy. The research focuses on the examination in implementing technology management in the processing of Sweet Potatoes and cucumber and also to formulate an alternative technology and business strategy in order to have a competitive advantage in the global market. The method used in this research is a case study using a descriptive analisys. Data gathered were analized with Industrial Technology Manual Indicator Method. This method was developed by Science and Technological Management Information System (STMIS) to analyze two technology indicator, which consists of technology transformation indicator and techndogy capacity indicator. Subsequently, data is analysed by using the Man Whitney non parametric statistics to test the significance of technology transformation indicator, including the Chi - Square method to be used in verifying the interdependency between the technology transformation indicator and technology capacity indicator. Based on the result from the analysis of internal and extemal matrix , including the mapping of SWOT matrix , the company's position is at dl one, which is growth strategy position . At this point , the company is required to reduce price, develop new product, develop higher quality product and seicein order to obtain growth in Sales, Asset, Profit or the combination of them. In general, PT. Tunas Prospecta Agritama has difficult in implementing technology management, since the company can not manage technology components very well, secondly PT. Tunas Prospecta Agritama has a good chance to continue its operation with growth position through vertical integration and finally the use of the current standard technology with business strategy of high quality technology could be implemented. In short term technology strategy , the use of standard technology along with the leadership nische market bussiness strategy could be implemented.
