Abstract

This study aims at: (1) identifying the external and internal factors influencing the management of PT Perintis Adiwana, (2) evaluating and analyzing the external and internal factors influencing the business position of PT Perintis Adiwana, and (3) formulating the company strategy for managing and developing PT Perintis Adiwana. The scope of study is limited to the evaluation toward the current company strategy and the formulation of strategy for PT Perintis Adiwana for the period of 2004-2008. The method of study is a case study approach. Primary and secondary data are collected from the company as well as from outside the company, such as from the Local Government and the Deportment of Foreshy. The processing of data is through a descriptive analyis, an external factor evaluation (EFE) matrix, an internal factor evaluation IFE matrix and an internal external (IE) matrix. The opportunities influencing PT Perintis Adiwana are : (1) the moratorium of natural forest production, (2) the tropical forest clearing issue, (3) the ecolabelling of forest products, (4) the timber need for crafrmanship for domestic and export, and (5) the incentive from the Government. While its threats are: ( 1 ) the regulations in the foreshy sector, (2) the regional autonomy, (3) the distribution of DR fund for the Industrial Plant Forest, (4) the social condition of the people, and (5) the competition with other countries. The strengths of PT Perintis Adiwona are: (1) the plant types in the Industrial Plant Forest, (2) the plant potential per hectare, (3) the availability of work force, (4) the security in the location, and (5) the support from the parent company. While the weaknesses are: (I) a long way to the market location, (2) the cost of medication and marketing, (3) the planting technology. (4) the processing of timber, (5) the age of the major plant and the composition of the plant types, and (6) the danger office. The result of evaluation toward the external and internal factors shows that the value of the external factors (EFE Matrix) is 3.j5, while the valrre of the internal factors (IFE Matra) is 2.55. Based on the high position of ihe EFE Matrix and the average position of the IFE Matrix, the company position is in the First Part of Qrradrant II of the IE Matrix. The preferred strategies in such position are the Intensive Strategy and the Integrative Strategy. The intensive strategies implemented are a new market penetration for timber products and a new product development, i.e. by processing the logs to be sawn timbers and processed timbers. Meanwhile, the integrutive strategy is a combination of timber processing and marketing currently managed by the payment company, i.e. PT Daya Sakti Timber.
